Child of Manticore Class Features/Abilities

Grow Spikes

A child of the manticore can grow spikes from her body and throw them. At 1st level, a child of the manticore can throw spikes from her body as a natural throwing ranged attack, which replaces her claw attack. This ability otherwise functions as the shifter claws class feature and benefits from all shifter claws improvements as well as shifter's fury. At will, a child of the manticore in her natural form can gain two spike attacks as a swift action to use as a weapon. The spikes can be used as a primary natural attack, dealing 1d4 points of piercing damage (1d3 if she is Small). As the child of the manticore gains levels, the power of her spikes increases. At 3rd level, her spikes bypass DR N/cold iron, N/magic, and N/silver. At 7th level, her spike damage increases to 1d6 (1d4 if Small). At 11th level, her spike damage increases to 1d8 (1d6 if Small). At 13th level, her spike damage increases to 1d10 (1d8 if Small). At 17th level, the damage die does not increase, but the critical multiplier becomes x3. Finally, at 19th level, the spikes bypass DR N/adamantine and N/-.

Manticore Aspect

A child of the manticore can take on the aspect of the manticore as a swift action. While in this form, she gains a +2 inherent bonus to her Strength and Dexterity scores. She can maintain this form for a number of minutes per day equal to 3 + her shifter level. The duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be spent in 1-minute increments. At 5th level, when making her first attack in each round, the child of the manticore throws two spikes instead of one (roll the weapon damage dice for the spike attack twice and add the results together before adding bonuses from Strength, weapon abilities (such as flaming), precision-based damage, and other damage bonuses). At 10th level, the inherent bonus to Strength and Dexterity increases to +4. At 15th level, the inherent bonus to Strength and Dexterity increases to +6. At 20th level, when making her first attack in each round, the child of the manticore throws four spikes instead of one (roll the weapon damage dice for the spike attack four times and add the results together before adding bonuses from Strength, weapon abilities (such as flaming), precision-based damage, and other damage bonuses). Her inherent bonus to Strength and Dexterity also increases to +8. Additionally, she now can use her manticore aspect and manticore shape at will.

Manticore Shape

At 4th level, a child of the manticore can use her wild shape ability to become a manticore. This ability lasts for 1 minute (the Master Shapeshifter mythic ability makes this duration permanent). Using manticore shape is a standard action that does not cause attacks of opportunity. The child of the manticore can use manticore shape a number of times per day equal to her shifter level + her Wisdom modifier. While in this form, she gains a speed bonus of +10 feet, the scent ability (30 feet), and four spike natural throwing ranged attacks (1d6 damage). At 9th level, the child of the manticore gains immunity to ground-based effects and a +4 bonus on damage rolls with natural attacks. At 14th level, the child of the manticore gains the improved natural attack ability with her spike attack. Primary natural attacks: spike This alters wild shape and replaces chimeric aspect and greater chimeric aspect.

This archetype is great, but very buggy. The spikes you throw have such a fast animation speed, that unless you're aiming at someone fairly close, you will waste attacks because the second attack will be launched before the first attack lands, even if the first attack is going to kill the target. So you'll waste attacks on targets that are already dead. Grow Spikes also doesn't work properly while in Manticore Shape (or at least what is displayed on your character/inventory screen doesn't take into account the increased damage die or crit multiplier from Grow Spikes, unclear on whether or not it's actually working in practice).

Despite all these bugs, still one of the best Shifter archetypes, I highly recommend multiclassing with a class that can get Point-Blank Master like fighter, slayer, ranger, etc. and the going Legend.

I thought I would mention the result of a test I did, since I found the description unclear. You CAN in fact, use Rapid Shot with spikes in either humanoid or manticore form.
