You restore life to a deceased party member. A raised creature has a number of hit points equal to its current HD. Raise dead also removes the death's door condition.

Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The subject of the spell gains two permanent negative levels when it is raised, just as if it had been hit by an energy-draingin creature, thought it can not gain a number of negative levels equal to or greater than its total Hit Dice this way.

A creature whose permanent negative levels already equal its Hit Dice cannot be brought back to life through raise dead.
