Mythic Path

Initial Mythic Features

Swarm-That-Walks is a Mythic Path in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. An all-devouring monstrosity. This is the path of ultimate Evil, and you should be ready to see even the closest of friends become your enemies - or your food.

"Destroy the demons invading from the Abyss, feed them to the swarm, and then turn your gaze upon Golarion. No price is too high for the one whose urge for vengeance eats them alive."

Swarm-That-Walks Information

Unlock:

  • At the beginning of Chapter 2, don't take the queen with you on the crusade.
  • After Leper's Smile, take a sample of the bug goop from the Vescavor Queen. Use it in the battle for Drezen (if the queen is with you she will veto your order to do so)
  • At the beginning of chapter 3, you'll get a quest to find a nascent vescavor queen in Drezen. Find it (it's in one of the houses), but don't kill it.
  • After defeating Xanthir Vang, ask him about how he became a swarm, then pick up his notes in the room. This will unlock a crusade project that takes 14 days. Complete it. This will trigger a scene with Anevia where she tells you that your companions are concerned about your research into swarms. Pick any option besides "I don't know what came over me."
  • At the beginning of chapter 5, you have to go back to the vescavor queen (same house as in chapter 3) and devour her.

Swarm-That-Walks Features

  • Your Companions will leave you after you turned into swarms.
  • Your army will be replaced by swarm units.
  • Swarm Infest: You send a part of your swarm to infest an enemy. It makes the target blind and deals 8d8 physical damage each round. This damage increases by 2d8 for each point of your swarm size. If the target dies while under this effect. it's automatically devoured. When the ability ends (by activating Swarm Form ability), you are healed for the amount of damage you've dealt to the enemy with Swarm Infest. Additionally, the target must make a Will saving throw (DC = 15 + double your mythic rank) or become panicked. Using this ability cancels Swarm Form.
  • Swarm Feast: Your swarm flies out of your body and starts attacking all enemies in 50 feet radius. Every round all enemies in the area are dealt (4 plus your swarm size) d6 physical damage. If they die while in the area, they are automatically devoured. Any ranged or ranged touch attacks against you have a 50% chance to miss.
  • Swarm Clone: You gain the ability to make your own clones using the swarm. They have all your abilities, but separate inventory. You can simultaneously have one clone per three points of your swarm size.

Swarm size is based on the total of all the CR of all the corpses you devour.  If you have Swarm Feast active, anything in range that dies will be automatically devoured.  Similarly, anything killed while under the effects of Swarm Infest will be automatically devoured.  Absent those conditions, you can Devour any NPC corpse that is left behind due to death by other means.

Devour (Swarm-that-Walks)

You send a part of your swarm to devour a corpse to increase the size of your swarm.

The increase depends on the CR of the devoured corpse. When the amount of eaten enemies hits a threshold, you gain permanently increased bonuses from other Swarm-That-Walks abilities.

Swarm Clone

You gain the ability to make your own clones using the swarm. They have all your abilities, but separate inventory. You can simultaneously have one clone per three points of your swarm size.

Swarm Form

You return all of the swarm into your body. You gain DR 5/- plus your swarm size and a bonus to natural armor equal to (4 plus your swarm size). This ability cancels Infest.

Host of the Great Swarm

You become a Host of the Great Swarm, which now lives inside your body. This symbiosis gives you Fast Healing and additional hit points depending on the size of the swarm. To increase the size of the swarm you need to devour other living beings.

Eye of the Swarm

From now on, you are made of the Swarm. You gain damage reduction of a swarm and immunity to attacks of opportunity. You Strength and Dexterity ability scores increase by (4 plus your swarm size). You gain immunity to most effect affecting a normal mortal body, such as poison, disease, paralysis and stun.\nAdditionally, while Swarm Form is active, all your attacks deal additional (4 plus your swarm size) damage and any opponent that attacks you in melee combat is dealt (4 plus your swarm size) d6 of damage.

The Swarm

You become The Swarm. Your Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma ability scores are increased by 4 plus your swarm size, you gain Spell Resistance equal to 25 plus your swarm size, and you gain immunity to most harmful conditions.

Is this based on anything in the tabletop at all? Anything in the lore of Golarion? Anything at all? It's really interesting but just like... what is it?

I'll be honest, I think it would be awesome had there been a Daemon Mythic Path too. Maybe instead of Swarm that Walks? I mean Daemons should, in theory, be as indiscriminately hyper evil and destructive as the Swarm that Walks so you get a similarly grim dark mythic path, but that way we could have had mythic paths for all three evil realms. Hell, Abbadon, and the Abyss rather than having two separate mythic paths for the Abyss. Swarm and Demon are both tied to the Abyss just in different ways. One's just a vanilla demon while the other is more closely related to Deskari specifically. Daemons could have involved one of the Four Horsemen, the Oinodaemon, or some other thing from Abbadon wanting to use the Commander and his mythic power to spread death and destruction across Golarian, or something like that?

I get they couldn't have mythic paths for every possible afterlife, which is why there's no Agathion mythic path or anything like that, otherwise they'd have had to cut non-afterlife mythics like Lich and Gold Dragon to fill in the spaces, but I still think it would have been interesting. Oh well though. Swarm is still an interesting Mythic Path in its own right.

So, an important feature that isn't mentioned anywhere, is that once you hit mythic 9 (eye of the swarm) your melee reach while having Swarm Feast active becomes the same as the swarm feast damage aura, 50 ft. Yes, your fists will attack from a whole screen away, and you get attacks of opportunity whenever something moves.

To get swarm size 8 was 3600. So I am noticing a pattern of about 600 per swarm size increase.
Also, I ran into a problem where I couldn't get to Rasping Rifts area because my perception check failed. Thankfully the creators put a second way to reveal the zone by going to IZ and doing an event roll.

To get swarm size 5 was 1500/5 for me.
Clones don't seem to be able to use Swarm abilities.
Also, when the cultists come and you have a choice of new abilities for eating them, I seem to not get them. Not sure if bugged or if I am doing something wrong.
Got one clone that is another mage which seems to work fine.
I am largely confused on how to get the abilities that are allegedly being offered by cultists.

Well, I derped. Meh. Took the queen with for romance BS on the Lich line just so I could stab her in the back thrice over. First, for being an idiot; Second, for her god; and third for thinking a fancy hat and chair means you get respect by default. The cherry on top is killing her and raising her. All I really wanted was to unlock it but ehh... that will be my last complete murder hobo run.

So if I understand right the other 9 paths can each be pretty easily defined as one of the 9 alignments but this one is Extra Evil?

Sage (sorcerer) Int + Str / polymorph (Dragonkind III build) is like a walk in the park (hard difficulty).
Tip: devour everyone and everything, at the end my swarm was 12 (4 clone!!!) and swarm infest was hitting like hell (plus the panic and blindness).

Bad experience. very painful to play as a melee. make sure ur build can solo really hard. After rank 9, it is braindead as u can basically ignore 95% of the damage. Clone is also trash (as a melee), it is u with swam size 3.
