The Music of the Abyss is a Quest in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Quests can provide unique adventuring experience, as well as powerful gears and treasures. Some quests are time-limited and some can only be completed with certain companions.
The Music of the Abyss Information
Rustling, grating, squeaking, and humming, a thousand mind-bending little voices - a vescavor swarm stands in the way of the crusader army. It's not the sort of opponent that these valorous knights expected to fight - not an enemy army, not even a huge monster, but a horde of tiny gluttonous beasts, able to pick a soldier to the bone, armor and all. Victory over the swarm will require desperate measures.
The Music of the Abyss Objectives
Get to the swarm queen
- Kill the queen, and the swarm will scatter. Every minute spent on this quest will be dearly bought by the lives of those busily distracting the bulk of the vescavors. Somewhere in a cave nearby, there are valuables that the beasts will destroy if they're not quickly retrieved. It comes down to a choice: life or treasure.
Discuss the finds with the companions
- The cave where the swarm nested holds some interesting finds - signs that the swarm did not end up in the army's path by accident. It's time to take stock and discuss this new information.
The Music of the Abyss Walkthrough
Vescavor swarms lie in the path of the crusade, and they must be dealt with. Before being able to enter Leper's Smile you will have an event on the world map where you will be faced with a choice. The swarms will scatter if the queen is killed, but a distraction party must be sent to draw away the bulk of the swarm. You must decide who will lead that party and how they will deal with the swarm. Your decision will impact how many of your army troops survive and how many crusade morale points you lose. The choices and their outcomes are:
- Send Irabeth
- Scatter! - No troop or morale loss
- Fight to the bitter end. - No troop or morale loss
- Send Nurah
- Scatter! - No troop or morale loss
- Fight to the bitter end. - No troop or morale loss
- Send Regill
- Fight to the bitter end. - Lose 15 morale, troops take heavy damage
- Allow the swarm to attack a few victims, then strike. - No morale loss, troops take minor damage
- Send Lann
- Fight to the bitter end. - Lose 15 morale, troops take moderate damage
- Maneuver and use cover. - Lose 10 morale, troops take moderate damage
- Send Sosiel
- Scatter! - Lose 30 morale, troops take moderate damage
- Hold position and fight for the soldiers' lives. - No troop or morale loss
If you choose Regill, Lann, or Sosiel, they will not be able to accompany you into Leper's Smile. Sosiel's second option yields the best outcome, resulting in no losses whatsoever. Interestingly, both of Irabeth's and Nurah's choices result in the same, but this may be attributed to a bug at the time of this testing (patch 1.1.7c) and they may be intended to have much higher penalties. You will lose additional troops and morale by looting certain caches in Leper's Smile (See that page for more details). Regardless of how many troops you lose, the leader of the distraction party always survives.
Once the event has resolved, you will be able to enter Leper's Smile and battle your way through swarms until facing off against the queen. The queen has high spell resistance, acid attacks, and a DC 20 Will save confusion aura. After defeating the queen, the quest is completed. You must choose the (Evil) dialogue choice in the ensuing conversation to gather the queen's slime if you wish to later unlock the Swarm that Walks mythic path.
There is an optional cave dungeon in the back where you can find more treasure and required items for both the Lich and Gold Dragon mythic paths. See Leper's Smile for more details.

The Music of the Abyss Tips & Tricks
- Once this quest is completed, you will be able to find a suspicious perfume bottle in Nurah's tent in Crusader's Camp with a Perception check. This must be done before completing the Lost Chapel. If you also succeed on a Perception check when you find Nurah during the gargoyle attack prior to the Lost Chapel, you will be able to talk to Nurah afterward and discover the identity of the traitor.
- If you take minimal troop losses during this quest and are able to take Drezen within 3 weeks of Act 2 starting, Queen Galfrey will reward you with a Ring of Protection +4.
- Once you return to the Crusader's Camp, speak to Wilcer Garms and answer his question to receive a bonus to your crusade until the end of Act 2.
